Photographs from Sakisa Bayete's (aka Marlowe Dan Thompson) memorial held at a Beech Street property owned by Nairobi College. Featured attendees included Muki Isora, Nobantu Ankoanda, Malonga Casque Lord (founder of Fua dia Congo), Shadidi Harding, Tiffany Uhila, Senter Uhila, Shauna Uhila (part of the Pacific Islander tribute), Yasmeen Oakley, Rashida Knox, Dee Uhila, and Hakim Tendaji.
Bayete moved to EPA in 1971. He was a political activist and former member of the Black Panther Party. He started the first drum class in the Ravenswood City School District in 1976 and was the director of the Belle Haven Music and Dance Ensemble. He worked for the school district for seven years as an assistant principal and math lab assistant. He was a poet, master drummer, sculptor, and singer. Many will also remember him as the South African Boot Dance instructor. He also worked with many Rites of Passage groups for young black males. He was a drummer for Fua Dia Congo and Wajumbe African American Dance Company, among other roles. He was also music director for the Kuumba Dance Ensemble at Stanford University. His objective in life was to develop a fine arts and performing arts complex in East Palo Alto to celebrate the ethnic and cultural diversity of the community.
